    摘要: This application relates to synthetic fuels and to a method of running compression ignition engines into which the fuels are injected or inducted. The fuels comprise mixtures of (A) at least one alcohol with an average molecular weight of less than 160 and (B) at least one further organic compound having a spontaneous ignition temperature of less than 450°C. Suitable alcohols (component (A)) include methanol, ethanol, propa- nols, isopropanol, butanol. The further organic compound or compounds (component (B)) may be selected from a wide range of compounds including alcohols, ethers, aldehydes for example acetaldehyde, compounds containing one or more nitrate groups and one or more ether linkages for example 2-ethoxyethyl nitrate, and nitrogen-containing organic compounds including azo compounds, tetrazines, nitroso compounds, nitro compounds, certain nitrate compounds and hyponitrites.

    摘要: The invention provides a device for converting an alcohol to an ether when fitted to a compression ignition engine, the device comprising a heal exchanger (28) having an inlet to receive the alcohol and an outlet in communication with the inlet end of a catalytic conversion chamber (44) which contains a catalyst for conversion of an alcohol to an ether. The conversion chamber (44) has an outlet pipe (46) to lead the ether to a cylinder (32) of a compression ignition engine. Alcohol is fed from a storage tank (10) along lines (18) and (48) direct to the cylinder (32) and along line (26) to heat exchanger (28). The invention also comprises a method of modifying a compression ignition engine using the device and a method of running the modified engine.
