A telecommunication system for transmitting cells through switching nodes (N1-3) interconnected by groups (LG12, LG23) of transmission links, each node including an asynchronous switching network (SN1-3) which comprises several switch elements. At least one of these switch elements posseses a routing group possiblity whereby the cells are distributed over its outlets and so further over the different transmission links of the link group to which the switching network is connected. This distribution is performed in function of a self-routing tag which is derived from external routing data associated with the cell. At the input ports of either each or only the first switching network (SN1) of the system, the external routing data is translated in a self-routing tag which is for instance added to the header of the cell, whilst at the output ports of each or of only the last switching network (SN3) of the system respectively, the self-routing tag is removed from this header. Some switch elements possesse a multicast possibility whereby the cells are transferred to several outlets thereof and thereby to several link groups to which the switching network is connected.

A communication switching module (SM, SM', SM'') used in module- stages of a multi- path self- routing switching network (SN) and able to transfer cells or packets of information from any input thereof to at least one of the outputs thereof. The switching module is built up with at least two stages (ISE11-14; ISE21-24; ISE31-34) of switching elements (ISE) each able to transfer these cells from inlets thereof to at least one outlet thereof. The switching element (ISE) as well as the switching module (SM, SM', SM'') has at least three outlets/ outputs which are arranged in routing- groups/ module- routing- groups to anyone outlet/ output of which a cell may be transferred respectively, each module- routing group including at least a routing group of one switching element of the last stage. The switching elements of a given stage (ISE11-14; ISE21-24) are coupled to the switching elements of the following stage (ISE21-24; ISE31-34) via bundles of Li (8) links, each of these links being constituted by an outlet- to- inlet connection, and Li (8) is at least equal to the number of the outlets comprised in the routing group having the smallest number of outlets that a switching element (ISE) can sustain for realizing a predetermined minimum traffic performance at a predetermined maximum load on its outlets. The switching module is built on a printed board assembly (PBA) carrying a plurality of switching elements (ISE) each built on a Large Scale Integrated (LSI) electronic circuit.

Routing logic means (RL) for a communication switching element (ISE) of a self- routing multi- stage switching network and able to transfer cells or packets of information from any of its inlets (I1-32) to any of its outlets (O1-32). The outlets of the switching element are arranged in routing groups containing one or more of them and of which the identity is derived by the routing logic means from an output- port- address (OPA) identifying an output of the switching network and contained in the self- routing- tag (SRT) associated to the cell. This cell is then transferred to one of the outlets belonging to the selected routing group. The routing logic means (RL) are also able to control the transfer of a cell through the switching element according to the execution of a predetermined routing function selected amongst a plurality of routing functions (RS, DI, MC, BH, IS). This routing function to be executed is selected by the routing logic means according to a routing- control- code (RCC) also contained in the self- routing- tag (SRT) and each value thereof identifies a specific transfer pattern constituted by a predetermined sequence of routing functions to be executed in the switching elements (ISE) through the switching network (SN).

The connectionless server is able to transfer messages constituted by information packets over a connection oriented switching network ATM in a connectionless way. It includes a plurality of processing modules TLK1 to TLKm, CLSP1 to CLSPn and CLPR1 to CLPRp, which perform respective predetermined actions on the information packets in a predetermined sequence and thereafter transfer these packets over the ATM network. The modules communicate with each other over a switching means MPSR which can be the ATM network. The time interval needed to perform the mentioned actions is at most equal to the minimum inter arrival time between two successive packets at the server. As a result the packet are handled on the fly.

The content of this memory location is then interpreted by a selection means (SEL) which identifies the routing groups included in the set and performs the second selection randomly selecting any one of the groups included in the set.

A cell resequencing system for a resequencing section (RS) having two inputs (S1n) coupled to inlets (I2n) of a switching network (SN2) via transmission links (TLn) arranged in a link group (LG). The cells transmitted from the inputs to outlets (N2m) of the switching network are subjected to a first variable time delay and are then stored in latching means (R2m) for a second variable time delay prior to be released to an output of the section. This second delay is so chosen that for each cell the sum of the first and second delays is substantially equal to a predetermined constant time value. The size of the latching means is determined by the difference between this predetermined constant time value and a fixed transfer delay (TD) below which no cell can be transmitted from an input to an outlet. A method for correlating in phase two clock means (CK1/2) producing time stamp values (tA1,tA2/tB) is also claimed. The first clock means sends a first time stamp value (tA1) to the second clock means (CK2) which then generates a second time stamp value (tB). A time stamp compensation value (TTC) equal to the difference between the second and the first time stamp value is then determined at the location (A/B) of either the first or the second clock means. This time stamp compensation value is function of both the phase difference between the two clock means and the fixed transfer delay (TD).
