The gateway negotiates with the network in order to select a particular bandwidth from the network. Subsequently, an audio codec appropriate for the selected audio bandwidth is selected. Audio codecs comprise variable and constant bit rate codecs and codecs corresponding to standards such as MPEG, Dolby, THX, APT etc.

In a method of managing network addresses for private voice communications, a first request is received from a requesting agent for a connection having a quality of service parameter, a second request for one of a plurality of network addresses based on the quality of service parameter is received, a network address in accordance with the second request is received, and the network address is sent to the requesting agent to establish the connection in accordance with the first request. A media access controller (MAC) is provided having a plurality of MAC addresses, and a requesting agent for sending a first request for a network address is connected to the MAC. A driver module is connected to the MAC and the requesting agent to receive the first request and determine whether the first request is for one of a multimedia connection or data connection. The driver module instructs the MAC to send a second request for a first network address using a first MAC address if the first request is for a multimedia connection, and to send a second request for a second network address using a second MAC address if the first request is for a data connection.
