A wireless telecommunication base station operable to provide a region of radio coverage within a wireless telecommunication network. The base station comprises: transmission apparatus operable to provide a first region of radio coverage on a first radio frequency and a second region of radio coverage on a second radio frequency. The first region of radio coverage comprises a plurality of angularly spaced first radio beams. The second region of radio coverage comprises at least a second radio beam. The second radio beam is arranged to radiate from the base station between adjacent angularly spaced first radio beams. It will be understood that aspects described provide a novel method for configuring sectors in a multi-carrier cellular network. Such an approach minimises or removes a poor signal to interference and noise ratio region between sectors and acts to significantly improve edge signal to interference and noise ratio whilst maintaining full frequency re-use. The concept is also applicable to OFDM systems such as LTE.

A network node method, a network node and a computer program product are disclosed. The network node method is for determining cell identifiers for small cell base stations within a wireless telecommunications network and comprises determining a cell identifier to be allocated to each of a plurality of small cell base stations which minimises reuse of cell identifiers between each small cell base station based on neighbour information obtained by each of the plurality of small cell base stations. In this way, a centralized approach is provided where a network node determines the cell identifiers using neighbour information received from the small cell base stations themselves. This helps to ensure that cell identifiers are allocated based on a more complete understanding of the small cell base stations within the wireless telecommunications network and avoids individual vendors allocating cell identifiers themselves.
