The invention relates to a method for producing elevated textures on a substrate, whereby an imprinting or coating composition containing a film-binding polymer coating, a solvent, thermally expandable polymer particles and, optionally, other usual additives is applied to the substrate by means of impression or coating. The printed or coated substrate is thermally treated. The invention is characterised in that the expandable polymer particles are coloured or colourless micro-spherical shaped expandable polystyrene particles having a particle diameter, in the non-expandable state, of 0.1 - 5 mm.
