The invention also relates to the production of said rylene tetracarboxylic acid diimides and to the use thereof for colouring organic and inorganic materials, in particular lacquers, printing inks and plastic materials, as a dispersing auxiliary agent and pigment additive for organic pigments, for producing aqueous polymer dispersions which can be absorbed in the close infrared area of the electromagnetic spectrum, in the production of markings and inscriptions which absorb infrared light and which are invisible to the human eye and as infrared absorbers for heat management.
