A system and method for increasing perceived contrast in a medical display is provided. The method involves temporarily increasing luminance output of at least part of a display in response to a received request for improved visualization. To compensate for the change in luminance especially while the viewer's eyes adapt to the change in luminance, the method includes continuously modifying the display parameters especially during an adaptation period to match an adaptation of the viewer's eyes. The modified parameters at any given may correlate to the degree of adaptation by the viewer's eyes to the change. After a period of time, the display may be returned to its normal operating luminance and corresponding settings, which may be selected to maximize the lifetime of the display.

Testing a display involves display of a series of test patterns, each at a different luminance or colour, and with a predetermined minimum difference of luminance or colour from their background, each pattern being unpredictable to a user, and determining if the user has correctly identified the patterns. This can enable a more objective test without needing external measuring equipment. Calibrating the display involves determining an output luminance level by detecting a minimal difference of drive signal to give a just noticeable output luminance difference at a given high luminance drive level, and determining an absolute luminance of the given high input luminance level from the minimal difference and from a predetermined human characteristic of visibility threshold of luminance changes. This can avoid the need for an external or internal sensor. This can be useful during conformance checks or during calibration of the display for example.

The apparent luminance or colour of the pixels can be made to take intermediate values between the gradations dictated by the stepsize corresponding to a least significant bit of the pixel addressable part, to enable more accurate reproduction of both colour and greyscale images. Additional intermediate output levels are concentrated at low illumination levels. A convertor generates a temporal modulation of the pixels for the LCD according to a value of the pixels in an input signal, and synchronized to the temporal modulation of the backlight.
