A brush housing 24 is associated with the base and has first and second open ends 42, 44. A brush 28 defining an axis is movably positioned in the housing between the first and second open ends. The brush extends from one of the open ends of the housing. The brush includes a surface 86 which is at a desired angle with respect to the brush axis. A biasing member 26 exerts a force on the brush to bias the brush into an electrical connection with a commutator 16. An electrical connector 30 electrically couples the brush to provide an electrical connection between the commutator and a power supply.

    摘要: An electric motor such as a universal series wound motor having permanent magnetic segments (38,40) mounted within slots formed in the poles (14,16) of the stator. The permanent magnets are precisely positioned and securely retained within the slots with an injected metal bonding agent having very stable mechanical properties even under severe temperature conditions. The permanent magnets ensure that a predetermined level of braking current exists when the armature is short circuited to effectively dynamically brake the motor. The AC supply signal is rectified to prevent demagnetization of the permanent magnets and to avoid overheating of the permanent magnets and the armature caused by the continuous changing of polarity of the AC supply signal. An alternative embodiment describes a modified armature core construction that sufficiently reduces eddy current losses to offset the addition of the permanent magnet braking members.

    摘要: A cylinder/magnet assembly for a field of an electric machine, such as a stator of a brush type motor or a rotor of a brushless motor, alternator or generator, is formed by inserting pre-formed magnets on a cylinder having anchors. Plastic is molded around the magnets and anchors to secure the magnets to a surface of the cylinder. In another aspect of the invention, magnets are inserted into magnet pockets of an assembly ring. The assembly ring is inserted into a cylinder and plastic molded around the assembly ring and magnets to secure the assembly ring and magnets to the cylinder. In another aspect of the invention, magnets are inserted in a first assembly ring which is then inserted in one side of a cylinder. A second assembly ring is inserted into the other side of the cylinder and mated to the first assembly ring. Plastic is molded around the assembly rings and magnets to secure them to the cylinder. In another aspect of the invention, magnets are inserted into magnet receiving pockets of a cylinder and plastic molded therearound. In another aspect of the invention, the north and south poles of a cylinder and magnet assembly have unequal distribution angles. In another aspect of the invention, the north and south poles a cylinder and magnet assembly have unequal numbers of magnets. In another aspect of the invention, the anchors are also formed as flux spreaders. In another aspect of the invention, flux spreaders are disposed on inner surfaces of the magnets of each pole of a cylinder and magnet assembly. In another aspect of the invention, the foregoing aspects are used in a stator of a motor. In another aspect of the invention, such a stator is used in a power tool.

The motor 12 includes a permanent magnet field 30 having an armature 34 disposed within the field. The armature 34 includes a shaft 36 having a DC commutator 38 disposed at one end of the shaft. The DC commutator is coupled to a first armature winding. An AC commutator 42 is disposed coaxially over a portion of the DC commutator 38 and is coupled to a second armature winding 44. A first pair of brushes 46 are disposed on the DC commutator 38 for coupling power from a DC power source to the first armature winding 40. A second pair of brushes 48 couple rectified AC power to the second armature winding 44. A power module including an AC/DC selector switch 26 enables a user to select whether AC or DC power is to be used to power the tool.
