In a portable circular saw, depth of cut adjustment is effected by pivoting movement between a shoe (24) (which supports the saw on a workpiece) and a motor and gear case housing (26) (carrying the saw blade (12)) about a pivot connection (28) rearward of the housing (26). Forward of the housing (26) an upwardly extending arcuate depth slide (38), fixed to the shoe (24), slidably engages an arcuate depth guide (40) carried by the housing (26) Towards the upper end of the depth slide (38), and in generally fixed relation to it, a clamping assembly (42) selectively clamps the depth slide (38) and depth guide (40) together to establish a depth of cut adjustment setting. The essentially fixed relationship of a locking knob (100) of the clamping assembly (42) to the shoe (24) mean that the operations of changing depth adjustment setting may be made without changing operator's hand positions on the saw. In addition, the fixed position of the knob (100) in sawing operations mean that by design, suitably shaped, sized and positioned, it may be used as an auxiliary handle in guiding the saw in sawing operations.

A power tool (10) includes a housing nose portion (24) on which is snapped a two-piece, moulded plastic depth-adjusting subassembly (22). Each member (26,28) of the subassembly (22) engages a respective area of the nose portion (24). An adjustment member (26) is rotatably connected to the nose portion (24), but is releasably restrained from axial movement upon engagement with a split-ring detent (76) on the nose portion (24). A locator member (28) is threadably connected inside the adjustment member (26), but is restrained from rotating through the interaction of integral keys (58) formed on its interior cylindrical surface with mating longitudinal keyways (80) formed on the nose portion (24). Thus when the operator rotates the adjustment member (26), the locator member (28) moves axially forwardly or rearwardly, depending upon the direction of rotation of the adjustment member (26). Another feature of this system (18) is the use of protuberances (60) integrally formed in the rear axial end (86) of the locator member (28) to inhibit lock-up between the locator member (28) and the adjustment member (26) after the locator member (28) has been drawn inwardly to its rearmost position.
