At least two output terminals of a driving IC chip is connected to one electrode and thereby the wiring electrodes are thickened more than twice. As a result, the variation of the resistance values due to the wiring electrodes is reduced. The driving IC chips are disposed at both ends of a strip-like electrode. Therefore no voltage difference between the right and left sides of the display screen occurs and no display difference between the right and left sides of the display screen occurs.

A single pulse is applied to a pixel in each subfield. The polarity of a single pulse applied in one subfield is opposite to that of a single pulse applied in the other subfield. A voltage applied in a period when a single pulse is not applied has a constant level of 0V or close to 0V.

This period may be provided at the initial part of the period when the light of one color is emitted or at the last part of that period.

A liquid crystal unit (10) provided with a liquid crystal panel (2) having a structure where antiferroelectric liquid crystal or ferroelectric liquid crystal is held between a pair of substrates (23a, 23b), and a back light (1) for illuminating the liquid panel. In order to improve the quality of image on the dispay screen, the quantity of output light from the back light (1) is regulated in accordance with the variations of the cone angle, the temperature of the liquid crystal panel (10) when in use, the polarization inversion current and the transmitted light. The relative angles of two polarizing plates (21a, 21b) is adjusted in accordance with these variations. The display screen shows an image of an excellent quality.
