Method of storing signals consisting of a succession of digital samples with three-dimensional structure which have already been bidimensionally transformed, and which are subjected to the transformation along the third dimension requiring the contemporaneous availability of samples of corresponding positions, belonging to Z successive bidimensional groups. The method provides a three-dimensional memory structure of Z planes each having the capacity of a group of samples, and the use of only two addressing modes of said memory alternating every Z groups; the first mode provides successive positions of the various planes to be addressed in sequence, the second mode provides corresponding positions of Z planes to be addressed with increments by Z on each plane. During each addressing, a reading operation occurs followed by a writing operation of a new sample in the just-read position. A device is also described for the implementation of the method.

The coding is carried out iteratively by coding at each iteration one of the coefficients of the block with an additional bit as compared to the preceding iteration, and evaluating at each iteration the global error value made if the image block is reconstructed starting from the total number of bits till now given to the block. The iterations relating to a block start from the coding of all its coefficients with zero bits and terminate when said global error becomes lower than a pre- determined threshold error. A device is also described to implement the method (Figure 1).
