There is disclosed linear polymers and copolymers of polymerized monoethylenically unsaturated monomers having a weight average molecular weight from about 1500 to about 15 000, with most of the polymer ends being terminated with hydroxyl groups, one at each end of the polymer molecule. These polymers have an average of from about 1.6 to 5 hydroxyl groups per polymer molecule. Thermosetting coating compositions containing these polymers are also disclosed. The monomers which are polymerized may include a small proportion of hydroxy-functional monomers, but desirably consist of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers lacking hydroxyl functionality. The polymers are produced by polmyerizing the monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in organic solvent solution medium containing a free radical initiator and a proportion of a chain-terminating agent which is a bis hydroxyorganic xanthogen disulfide in which the organic group is preferably an alkylene group contains from 2-18 carbon atoms to provide the desired molecular weight. The polymers are preferably liquid to slowly flowable at room temperature in the absence of organic solvent.

An ultraviolet curing liquid coating composition which, when cured with ultraviolet light in the presence of an appropriate photoinitiator, provides a coating adapted for the coating of optical glass fiber. This coating composition comprises as the essential component, an acrylate-terminated polyurethane oligomer based on a polyfunctional core which is at least trifunctional and which supports one branch for each functionality in the core. Each of the branches leads to an acrylate-functional terminal group, with there being from about 150 to about 2500 units of molecular weight in each branch between the trifunctional core and the acrylate-functional terminal group. Depending primarily upon the molecular weight of the branches, one can provide coating compositions for buffer coat, single coat or topcoat use.

An hydroxy-functional polyurethane reaction product is disclosed which enables the provision of thermosetting solution coating compositions which cure at low temperature to form flexible coatings. These polyurethanes are provided by the reaction of an organic diisocyanate with a stoichiometric excess of an essentially linear hydroxy-functional polyester which is the polyesterification reaction product of C 4 -C 10 aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof with a stoichiometric excess of C 3 -C 8 aliphatic diol providing an alcohol/acid molar ratio of 3/2 to 6/5. The reaction is substantially complete as indicated by an acid number less than 10, and the diisocyanate is used in an amount providing an NCO/OH ratio of from 2/3 to 12/13. The thermosetting solution coating composition is provided by an organic solvent having dissolved therein from 5-50% of total resin solids of a curing agent reactive with hydroxy groups together with the polyurethane which has been described. The preferred curing agent is a partially methylolated melamine which contains from about 5 mol percent to about 40 mol percent of the methylol group.

Ultraviolet curing oligomers and liquid coating compositions based thereon are disclosed which cure with ultraviolet light in the presence of a photoinitiator. The coating compositions can provide either a single coating for optical glass fiber which resists microbending difficulties down to around -40°C.. or a topcoat for overcoating softer buffer coatings which resist microbending down to around -60°C. The coating compositions consist essentially of the linear polyacrylate-terminated polyurethane polyurea oligomer in admixture with an ultraviolet curable liquid acrylate or polyacrylate to provide the liquidity needed for application and to adjust the hardness or softness of the cured coating for the selected single coat or topcoat utility. The oligomer contains a linear polyurethane core terminated by urea formation with a polyhydroxy-functional amine containing a single isocyanate-ractive amino hydrogen atom. The plurality of hydroxy-terminated branches provided by the amine are capped with an acrylate-functional brances increase the toughness and the cure speed.

A process is disclosed in which polyalkoxy amino silane adhesion promoters are incorporated into isocyanate-functional polyurethane resins formed by the reaction of a stoichiometric excess of organic polyisocyanate with an hydroxy-functional resin without producing cloudy and/or unstable resin solutions. In this process, the hydroxy-functional resin is prereacted with the alkoxy functionality of the amino silane in a reaction which liberates alcohol, and then a stoichiometric excess of the organic polyisocyanate is added to cause the isocyanate groups of the polyisocyanate to react with both the hydroxy groups and the amino hydrogen atoms present.
