Compositions de revêtements liquide photodurcissables adaptées pour produire des revêtements primaires destinés à des fibres de verre optique. Ces compositions comprennent un polyuréthane à terminaison (méth)acrylate, un (méth)acrylate d'un phénol à substitution d'alkyle contenant un à dix atomes de carbone ou non substitué, lequel est alcoxylé à l'aide d'un oxyde d'alkylène contenant deux à quatre atomes de carbone et au moins un alkylacrylate ayant une Tg inférieure à environ -45 °C. Les films produits à partir de ces compositions durcissables aux ultra-violets, sont souples et possèdent une bonne résistance à l'eau ainsi qu'une bonne adhérence en milieu humide.

Free-radical curable compositions contain a (meth)acrylate oligomer and at least one of a single functional diluent, a mixture of single functionality diluents and a dual functional monomer wherein the ratio of electron-rich double bonds to electron deficient double bonds in the compositions is in the range of about 5:1 to about 1:5. The compositions can further comprise at least one of a reactant having a saturated backbone and an average of at least one electron deficient ethylenically unsaturated end group per molecule of saturated reactant and an oligomer having an average of at least one electron-rich ethylenically unsaturated group per molecule of oligomer. These compositions are useful as coatings for various substrates.

A method of investment casting that utilizes a pattern produced by stereolithography is disclosed. The pattern has a polymeric matrix that has intersticial spaces dispersed throughout. The spaces have therein a thermoplastic material that flows from the matrix upon heating during the investment casting process, softening the pattern to prevent the thermal expansion of the pattern from cracking or deforming the mold.

Aqueous dispersions of partially cross-linked copolymer particles useful in aqueous coating compositions is produced by copolymerizing in aqueous emulsion a mixture of: (A) from 1% to 30% of polyethylenically unsaturated monomer; (B) from 3% to 30% of hydroxy-functional monoethylenically unsaturated monomer; (C) from 0.5% to 10% of a salt-forming monoethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from monoethylenic carboxylic acid monomer and monoethylenic amine monomer; and (D) the balance of the copolymer consisting essentially of copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, preferably nonreactive monomer such as vinyl acetate. The copolymer particle-containing suspension produced by the emulsion copolymerization is coagulated with water immiscible organic solvent which is a poor solvent for the copolymer, such as butanol, to provide a liquid phase containing coagulating solvent and the water and surfactants used in the emulsion copolymerization and a coagulum of the copolymer particles in the suspension. This coagulum, after removal of the liquid phase, is dispersed in water with the aid of a salt-forming volatile acid or a volatile base and a water-miscible organic solvent, said last-named solvent being present in the aqueous dispersion in an amount insufficient by itself to dissolve the coagulum in the absence of the salt-forming acid or base.

There is disclosed a thermosetting solvent solution coating composition comprising volatile organic solvent having dissolved therein at least about 45% of a fluorocarbon polymer together with at least about 10% of an hydroxy-functional organic soluble copolymer of from 3% to 8°0 of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, balance consisting essentially of nonreactive monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, and an aminoplast curing agent in an amount to cure the hydroxy-functional copolymer, These coatings exhibit improved water spot resistance and minimum color change and gloss reduction on exterior exposure.

Thermosetting aqueous anionic electrocoating composition are disclosed which comprise a carboxyl-functional anionic polymer dispersed in water with the aid of water miscible organic solvent and a volatile base, and from about 1% to about 5%, based on the weight of the polymer content of the composition, of an oxirane-free epoxy phosphate, this epoxy phosphate being produced by slowly and incrementally adding a resinous polyepoxide to a solvent solution containing from 0.05 to 0.9 mole of orthophosphoric acid per oxirane equivalent in the polyepoxide together with sufficient water to hydrolyze all of the oxirane functionality which is not consumed by the orthophosphoric acid. These epoxy phosphates improve the corrosion resistance of electrodeposited cured coatings without objectionably wrinkling their surface.
