The novel compounds may be formulated into herbicidal compositions in conventional manner. The compounds may be prepared by reacting an appropriate sulfonyl isocyanate of formula JS0 2 NCO with an appropriate heterocyclic amine, also novel per se.

Cl, Br, OCH 3 , CH 3 , NO 2 , CO 2 R 2 , S(O) n R 3 , SO 2 NR 4 R 5 , SO 2 N(OCH 3 )CH 3 or OSO 2 R 6 : R 2 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 3 -C 4 alkenyl, CH 2 CH 2 CI or CH 2 CH 2 0CH 3 ; R 3 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl; R 4 and R 5 are independently C 1 -C 4 alkyl; R6 is C 1 -C4 alkyl or CF3; n is 0, 1 or 2; X is C 1 -C 2 alkyl, C 1 -C 2 alkyi substituted with OCH 3 , CF 3 , C 1 -C 3 alkoxy, N(CH 3 ) 2 , NHCH 3 , NH 2 , or SCH 3 ; Y is CH 3 , OCH 3 or Cl; Z is CH or N; and W is 0 or S; and their agricultural salts; exhibit herbicidal activity. They may be formulated for use in conventional manner. The compounds may be made by reacting novel herbicidally active compounds of formula
wherein X' and Y 1 are chlorine or bromine. with an alkali metal methoxide; or by reacting the appropriate quinolinesulfonamide with the appropriate heterocyclic isocyanate.

Compounds of the formula (wherein A' is H, F, Cl, Br, CH,O or N0 2 ; A and A 2 are selected independently from Cl, F, Br, NO 2 , CH 3 and alkoxy; from a wide variety of substituted sulfonamide and sulfonate groups; and (with the exception of A) from a wide variety of substituted ester and thioester, alkylcarbonyl and oximated alkylcarbonyl groups; B is (wherein R 4 is H or CH 3 ; R' is selected from a variety of substituted pyrimidinyl, furopyrimidinyl and triazinyl groups; R 6 is C 1-6 alkyl and W is O or S)) and agriculturally suitable salts thereof exhibit herbicidal activity and also may be of interest as plant growth regulants. Certain of the compounds may be useful for selective weed control in crops such as rice. The compounds can be formulated for use in a conventional manner. They may be prepared by a variety of processes e.g. by reacting a compound of the formula wherein A, A 1 , A 2 and W 5 are as defined above with an appropriate amine HNR 4 R 5. Some of the intermediate isocyanate or isothiocyanate compounds shown above form further features of the invention. They may be made e.g. by reaction of the corresponding sulfonamides with phosgene. Intermediates having the formulae and (wherein Z is CH or N) are also within the scope of the invention.
