In a method for checking the compatibility of a measurement system comprising a measuring transducer MU and a sensor S, a first signature S1 is externally created for a characteristic data record KDS which is stored in the measuring transducer MU. After the characteristic data record KDS has been transmitted from the measuring transducer MU to the sensor S, a second signature S1´ is calculated for the characteristic data record KDS in the sensor S. If the signatures S1 und S1´ match, the measuring transducer MU and the sensor S are compatible and the measuring transducer MU can access data and/or functions of the sensor S.

A method for operating a measuring point (1, 2, 3) having a base unit (11, 12, 13) and a sensor unit (21, 22, 23), said sensor unit being coupled to the base unit via a plug connector coupling; the base unit being used for power supply of the sensor unit, for data exchange with the sensor unit, and for communication with a process monitoring facility, said base unit comprising: a first element, which has a first microprocessor for sensor data preparation for communication to the process monitoring facility (30, 31); a first data memory for storing data specific to the measuring point; said sensor unit having a primary sensor and a sensor head; the primary sensor comprising a converter which outputs a signal as a function of a measured variable; said sensor head comprising: a circuit for preparing the converter signals using an A/D converter and a second microprocessor for measurement signal processing, a second data memory for sensor data; a program memory, which contains firmware; and an interface having a second element of the plug connector coupling; a software module, which allows supplementary functions to the primary sensor monitoring, being transmitted from said base unit to said sensor unit and being stored in said program memory of said sensor unit.
