A process and system for the vapor phase alkylation of an aromatic substrate in a multi-stage alkylation reaction zone having a plurality of series-connected catalyst beds spaced from one another to provide mixing zones between adjacent catalyst beds. A feedstock containing an aromatic substrate and a C 2 -C 4 alkylating agent is supplied to an inlet side of the reaction zone. The reaction zone is operated at conditions in which the aromatic substrate is in the gas phase and causing vapor phase alkylation of the aromatic substrate as the aromatic substrate and the alkylating agent flow through the reaction zone and pass from one catalyst bed to the next. A quench fluid comprising one or both of the aromatic substrate and the alkylating agent is supplied into the interior of the mixing zone through a plurality of flow paths in which one portion of the flow paths is directed upwardly within the mixing zone and another portion downwardly within the mixing zone. Alkylated product is then recovered from the downstream side of the reaction zone. The quench fluid is supplied to the mixing zone through a plurality of dispersion channels which are spaced laterally from one another and extend transversely across the mixing chamber. At least some of the dispersion channels dispense the quench fluid alternately, upwardly and downwardly within the mixing zone.

A process for the production of an alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon such as ethylbenzene by alkylation of benzene with an olefin such ethylene, propylene, 1-butene or isobutene with a catalyst in an alkylation reactor under liquid or gas phase conditions includes alkylating benzene with an olefin in a reaction zone at a temperature of from about 175°C. to about 500°C. and a pressure of from about 200 psi to about 800 psi, withdrawing a reactor effluent stream and separating the reactor effluent stream into a product stream and a recycle stream each containing ethylbenzene and unreacted benzene and directing the recycle stream containing ethylbenzene and unreacted benzene back to the reaction zone wherein the ratio of the liquid volume of the recycle stream to the volume of fresh benzene feed is from 0.1:1 to 50:1.

At least a portion of the polyalkylated component is supplied along with benzene to a transalkylation reaction zone operated in the liquid phase. Disproportionation product from the transalkylation reaction zone is supplied to a second alkylation zone containing a molecular sieve aromatic alkylation catalyst. Ethylene is also supplied to the second alkylation zone which is operated under temperature and pressure conditions to cause liquid phase ethylation of the benzene. The alkylation product from the second alkylation zone is supplied to the aforementioned intermediate recovery zone.
