In order to control the speed of a conveyor (2) for supplying printed products to stacking devices (A, B, C), an assignment plan (Z) is maintained for the stacking devices (A, B, C), said assignment plan containing products (P, P*) that were detected on the conveyor (2) at a detection point (DD) upstream of the stacking devices (A, B, C) and that can be processed at a defined target speed (55) of the conveyor (2) by an associated stacking device (A, B, C). The target speed (55) of the conveyor (2) is automatically reduced if at least one detected product (P, P*) in the assignment plan (Z) cannot be associated with one of the stacking devices (A, B, C) in such a way that said product can be processed at the unreduced target speed (55) of the conveyor (2). The determination of whether and by which of the stacking devices (A, B, C) a product (P, P*) can be processed at the target speed (55) and the virtual assignment of the products (P, P*) to one of the stacking devices (A, B, C) on the basis of said determination makes it possible to automatically, dynamically, and flexibly adapt the conveying speed to production-specific parameters and states, wherein the production output is kept as high as possible.
