    摘要: Disclosed are optical couplers (10) and optical coupling systems for coupling a source of non-coherent light to a light distribution harness, wherein the couplers are polygonal in cross section to increase light mixing. The couplers have inlet (12) and outlet (14) arms and an intermediate bend region (16A) configured to achieve compactness and minimal light loss through the bend region. In one embodiment, the bend region is an integral part of the coupler, with the inlet arm having a different cross-sectional dimension (12A) from the outlet arm (14A) in such manner that substantially all light (30) directed from the inlet portion (12) to the bend portion (16A) reaches (31,32) the outlet arm portion (14), and light rays parallel to the inlet axis are reflected in the bend portion to be directed substantially parallel to the outlet axis. In a second embodiment, the bend region comprises a prism having a pair of parallel spaced surfaces, and inlet, outlet, and third surfaces that are non-parallel to the spaced surfaces. The inlet arm projects from the inlet surface, and the outlet arm projects from the outlet surface. One of the inlet and outlet surfaces forms a first interface with a first material having an index of refraction different from that of the prism, so that light rays within the prism totally internally reflect from the first interface.

The delivery ends of the optical fibers are disposed relative to one another so as to form a plurality of display pixels. At least two of the optical fibers are combined to form each of the pixels. The diameters of the at least two optical fibers that make up each pixel are different thereby allowing that at least four different greyscale levels can be achieved for each display pixel.

    摘要: A central lighting system for providing light to locations remote from the light source includes first and second ellipsoidally shaped reflector members (102,104) joined so as to substantially surround the light source (12). The reflector members collect the light output and focus it onto an input face of either a light guide (18) or a non-imaging optical coupling member (106,108). If the optical coupling member is utilized, an angle to area conversion occurs so as to allow light introduced at high angles to an input face of the optical coupler to exit the optical coupler at a smaller angle. The reflector members can also be configured so that respective second optical focal points can reside at the apex of the opposing reflector member thereby allowing for a coupling efficiency of approximately 70% or greater.

    摘要: An optical coupling assembly (12) is useful for coupling a source of light (14), having high brightness and being non-coherent and focussed at a focal plane P, to a plurality of optical light conductors (16). The coupling assembly (12) includes an elongated light transmissive coupling member (24) which has a central longitudinal axis A and is disposed between the focal plane P of the light source (14) and leading ends (16A) of the optical light conductors (16). The elongated coupling member (24) is any one of a limited number of different polygonal cross-sectional shapes. Also, the coupling member (24) can have either a hollow tubular or a solid configuration. The hollow tubular member is coated with a highly reflective material (28A). In one embodiment, the polygonal cross-sectional shape of the coupling member (28) remains constant along the entire axial length of the coupling member (28). In another embodiment, the polygonal cross-sectional shape of the coupling member (28) remains constant at a pair of front (30) and rear (32) end portions and at a middle portion (34) disposed between them and decreases and increases along the axial length of the coupling member at front (36) and rear (38) transitional portions respectively disposed between the front end portion (30) and the middle portion (34) and between the middle portion (34) and the rear end portion (32) of the coupling member. The front (36) and rear (38) transitional portions can vary either linearly or non-linearly along their axial lengths.

    摘要: A thin, efficient and uniform illuminator for large areas comprises optically clear plastic wedge (12) or a series of such plastic wedges applied to or formed integrally with a back surface of an area to be illuminated. Light is collected and concentrated from a high efficiency light source. The concentrated light is focused as an input to one or more light guides (14). The light guides may be optical fibers. The light guides or fibers are fused or mated in some other way to an edge (13) of the or each plastic wedge. The wedge shape increases the angle of the internal reflections of the edge coupled light per unit distance and intercepts more of the light as the wedge gets thinner. To further enhance the uniformity of the illuminating light, light scattering centers may be added to the surface or volume of the wedge. The number of scattering centers over the illuminating surface of the wedge or within the volume of the wedge may increase along the distance moving away from the light source.
