A bipolar battery comprising a plurality of bipolar electrodes stacked together, each bipolar electrode comprising a conductive septum (2) having positive and negative active material on opposite faces thereof. Each electrode has a non-conductive frame (6) formed thereabout, and a mesa-like lattice (8) which is integral with the frame (6), overlays each face of the septum (2) and is defined by an annular shoulder (14a,14b) formed between the border (5) of the lattice (8) and the frame (6). Discrete spacer frames (30) interjacent the electrode frames (6) separate the electrodes from each other and define a region (32) thereabout for retaining electrolyte of the battery. The faces of the spacer frame (30) each include an annular recess (14a,14b) contiguous to an inner rim (33) thereof which receives, in nesting fashion, the mesa-like lattices (8) for interlocking the frames (6,30) together.

Process for heat-sealing a thermoplastics cover (16) to a thermoplastics container (2) in which the cover (16) has a channel (18') formed thereon for receiving a sealing lip (14) on the container walls (6,8). The lip (14) and a floor (26') of the channel (18') are melted and then cooled to form beads (46,48) having a solidified skin (50,52) of thermoplastics material over a molten core (54,56). The lip (14) is mated with the channel (18') and the melted portions thereof coalesced with the melt from the floor (26'). Some of the coalesced melt (60) exudes between the lip (14) and the sides of the channel (18') and solidifies to provide additional bonding. The product produced by the process is also claimed.

A bi-polar electrode for a Pb-acid battery comprises a lead septum plate (2) and a porous coating (16) on at least one face (18) of the septum plate (2) for anchoring at least a positive active material paste (24) to the septum plate (2). The porous coating (16) comprises multiple layers of lead particles (20) fused together and to the septum face (18) so as to define a plurality of interconnected, interstitial pores (22) therebetween. The particles (20) are fused droplets of lead arc-sprayed into the surface of the septum plate (2). A particular bi-polar battery construction useful with the bi-polar electrode is also disclosed.

A temperature-controllable electric storage battery having monobloc construction and including thin, planar, heat-exchangers (8,30,32) placed throughout the battery between the electrode plates thereof. Preferably, the heat-exchangers (8,30,32) will comprise the intercell partitions of the battery container (2) and the liquid passages therein will have an elongated cross-section in a direction transverse of the passage so as to provide a wide passage having the majority of the surfaces defining the passage lying in planes substantially parallel to the external faces of the heat-exchangers (8,30,32).
