The method (200) also includes removing (214) the core (108) from the composite component (100,101).

A method for making an equiaxed investment casting. The method utilizes an ultrasonic generator 50 to send an ultrasonic pulse into molten metal in an investment casting mold 32. The investment casting mold 32 is positioned within a working zone 22 of furnace 20 having low output induction coils 24 for generating a convection current in molten metal. The ultrasonic pulse separates dendrites growing from the face of the mold 32 inward into the molten metal. Instead, equiaxed grains can nucleate within the molten metal. In addition, the ultrasonic pulse and the low output induction coils 24 circulate the molten metal as solute is rejected from solidifying equiaxed grains. The mixing reduces the effects of segregation in the solidifying alloy and assists in nucleating equiaxed grains.

A method for treating a field operated component (100) is disclosed which includes providing the component (100) including a ceramic matrix composite (102) and removing a first portion (106) of the component (100), forming a first exposed surface on the component. The method further includes providing a second portion (202) including the composite (102), the second portion (202) having a second exposed surface including a conformation adapted to mate with the first exposed surface. The second portion (202) is positioned in association with the component so as to replace the first portion (106), and the second portion (202) and the component (100) are joined to form a treated component (300). Another method is disclosed wherein the component (100) is a turbine component which further includes removing an environmental barrier coating from the component (100), arranging and conforming the first exposed surface (200) and the second exposed surface (204) to define a joint (302), and applying an environmental barrier coating to the treated component (300).

Forming the CMC precursor ply assembly (100) includes laying up a plurality of CMC precursor plies (102) and entraining a melt infiltration agent (104) to form an entrained agent supply (106). Each of the plurality of CMC precursor plies (102) includes a first matrix precursor (108) and a plurality of ceramic fibers (110). The plurality of CMC precursor plies (102) and the entrained agent supply (106) are arranged to form the CMC precursor ply assembly (100), which includes an article conformation (112). The method further includes carbonizing the CMC precursor ply assembly (100), infusing the melt infiltration agent (104) from the entrained agent supply (106) into the plurality of CMC precursor plies (102), and densifying the CMC precursor ply assembly (100) with the melt infiltration agent (104) to form the CMC article (200).

The method further includes debulking the pieces of CMC remnant scrap material (30) into a rigidized shape, the rigidized shape having gaps (152) between adjacent pieces of CMC remnant scrap material (30) of about 10 microns and about 10 mm and a gap spacing between about 50 microns and about 50 mm, and forming the rigidized shape into a mold (20).
