The invention refers to the driving method of a liquid-crystal switching element of a printer in which a ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of plates provided with electrodes on adjacent surfaces thereof, which is characterized in that the following equation is substantially satisfied: (where to, t 1 , t 2 and t 3 are times) if the voltage applied to a said ferroelectric liquid crystal during a printing operation is V 1 , the period during which said voltage V, is applied is T, (= t 1 - to), the period during which a photoconductive surface is moving is T 2 (= t 3 - t 2 ), and the voltage applied during said period T 2 to said ferroelectric liquid crystal is V 2 . The invention refers also to the corresponding printer.
