Herein disclosed is a camera recording system which is capable of selectively imaging an image having an aspect ratio - a ratio between the horizontal length and vertical length of a frame - of 4 : 3 as in the NTSC system and an image having a horizontally longer aspect ratio of m : n (m/n > 4/3) than the former ratio. Further disclosed is a usable method which allows the user to take only one turn for selecting the aspect ratio. The method is represented by three kinds: one using a lens unit; another using the scanning range of an image tube; and still another using an expander circuit. What is required of the user is only one turn of switching the lenses or switches, and the remaining necessary switching operations are automated.

A video tape recorder allows a normal video signal for an aspect ratio of 4 : 3 or a wide-picture video signal for a greater aspect ratio of, for example, 16 : 9 to be selectively recorded/reproduced onto and from a magnetic tape. In a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus, wherein a moving picture signal and an audio signal following the moving picture are recorded and reproduced on a first area in a recording track inclined to a traveling direction of a magnetic tape and digital data indicating a one-cut (a frame or a field) still picture signal is recorded and reproduced on a second area in the recording track, there are provided a circuit (157) for detecting that digital data indicating the still picture is reproduced by an amount of data corresponding to the one-cut still picture, a switch (1) which is operated by a person who monitors pictures and used to instruct restart of the magnetic tape, and a logic circuit (3). The logic circuit (3) generates an instruction for switching the reproduced signal output from the moving picture to the still picture on the basis of the output of the detection circuit (157), an instruction for rewinding the magnetic tape to near the recording start position of the digital data indicating the still picture and stopping the magnetic tape there, an instruction for switching the reproducing signal output from the still picture to the moving picture when the switch (1) is operated, and an instruction for traveling the magnetic tape once again at the general traveling speed for reproducing the moving picture signal.

In a rotary magnetic head helical scan type video tape recorder using a segment recording system, a video signal of one vertical scanning period is divided into n video signal blocks (V), where n is an integer equal to or larger than 2, and a redundant period (V-BLK) having a predetermined period is inserted into the video signal blocks (V) in a recording mode. Each of the video signal blocks (V) has a number of horizontal scanning lines equal or smaller than N/n, where N is the number of the horizontal scanning lines in a field of the video signal. In a reproducing mode, a time axis error of reproduced series of the video signal blocks (V) is corrected at least during the redundant periods (V-BLK). Then, the corrected blocks are converted into the original video signal.
