The optical disk (23) has encoded on it a mixing master music and effects ('M & E') track, or a switching master M & E track. Individual audio tracks are provided for language-specific versions of the same motion picture, but these tracks have data recorded in them only where there is dialog. In this way, for many a motion picture, all tracks but masters will have data recorded for well less than half of the running time of the motion picture. When a mixing master is used, it is mixed with a language-specific track when the latter has dialog the mixing master contains no dialog. If a switching master is used, it may contain dialog recorded with the M & E when a language-specific track has dialog recorded in it, it also contains M & E and the track is played to the exclusion of the switching master.

To prevent particular transmission equipment (not shown) from artificially increasing low level audio signals (8) to a predetermined allowable level, such signals are first summed (in 15) with a stabilization signal (32) having a predetermined frequency to form a composite audio signal (16). Moreover, the stabilization signal has a level that prevents any increase in signal level that may be artificially imposed on the composite signal during the processing of the composite signal by the transmission equipment. Once the composite signal has been so processed, then the stabilization signal is removed therefrom and the original audio signal is outputted to associated transmission media.

The invention relates generally to a storage medium carrying symbols representing digital information, the recovery from a storage medium of symbols representing digital information and the determination of the digital information represented by such symbols. More particularly, the invention relates to storage media carrying the symbols in two dimensions and to the recovery of such symbols by oversampling in two dimensions. While the invention has many applications, the invention is described in connection with preferred embodiments in which the symbols are carried by and recovered from an optical-storage medium, namely, motion picture film, the symbols representing digital information into which motion picture soundtrack and related information is encoded.
