The translation apparatus may comprise a plurality of drive pinions (24, 28, 40, 42) mounted to the cartridge access device (12, 112, 280) and engaging the plurality of elongate gear racks (20, 22, etc.), and a pinion drive apparatus (32) operatively associated with the drive pinions. The pinion drive apparatus (32) rotates the drive pinions (24, 28, 40, 42) to move the cartridge access device (12, 112, 280) among the elongate gear racks of the adjacent modular units (155, 157, 210, 212, 214). The adjacent modular units may be comprised of a master modular unit (210) and at least one slave modular unit (212, 214). The master modular unit further comprises a power supply (240) and may also comprise a control system (242) operatively associated with the pinion drive apparatus (32), and each slave modular unit (212, 214) may be electrically connected to the power supply (240) in the master modular unit (210).

A third drive assembly (100, 200) is operably connected to the cartridge engaging device (30, 152) and is adapted to rotate the cartridge engaging device (30, 152) around an axis (CC, DD). In one embodiment, the cartridge engaging assembly (12) also includes a flip latch assembly (62), and the second drive assembly (80) and the third drive assembly (100) use the same motor (86). One or two tracking devices 140, 144, 146) such as a bar code reader may also be included. A cartridge handling system (10) utilizing the cartridge engaging assembly (12, 150) of the present invention is also disclosed, as is a method (112) for rotating a cartridge engaging device (30) of the cartridge engaging assembly (12) of the present invention.
