摘要: An environmentally sequestered nuclear spent fuel pool in one embodiment includes sidewalls and a base slab that confine a water impoundment. The pool includes fuel racks containing spent fuel assemblies which heat the water via radioactive decay. A dual liner system enclosing the pool forms an impervious barrier providing redundant provisions for preventing leakage of contaminated pool water into the environment. An interstitial space is formed between the liners which may be maintained at sub-atmospheric pressures by a vacuum pump system that evacuates the space. By maintaining the pressure in the space at a negative pressure with corresponding boiling point less than the temperature of the pool water, any leakage through the inner-most liner into the interstitial space will vaporize and be extracted via the pump for signaling a potential leak in the liner system.

摘要: An autonomous facility for storing spent nuclear fuel in one embodiment includes a building forming an enclosed interior space containing a water-filled spent fuel pool. The pool includes fuel racks containing spent fuel assemblies which heat the water via radioactive decay. A passive cooling system includes a submerged heat exchanger in the pool and an air cooled heat exchanger located in ambient air outside the building at a higher elevation than the pool heat exchanger. A heat transfer working fluid circulates in a closed flow loop between the heat exchangers via unpumped natural gravity driven flow to cool the fuel pool. The air cooled heat exchanger may be enclosed in a concrete reinforced silo adjoining the building for impact protection. The building may include a cask pit formed integrally with the pool to allow fuel assembles to be removed from a transport cask and loaded into the fuel rack underwater.

摘要: A dry storage systems for radioactive nuclear waste materials in one embodiment includes a canister having a tubular shell defining an internal cavity for storing nuclear waste material, a lid sealably welded to one end the shell, and an end closure attached to a second end of the shell. The end closure includes a base plate having an upturned peripheral annular closure flange. In one embodiment, a circumferentially-extending butt joint is formed between the closure flange and the shell second end which is hermetically seals by a full through-wall thickness butt weld. Various embodiments may further include secondary pressure retention barriers enclosing the canister or select portions thereof most susceptible to failure under certain conditions.

摘要: An apparatus, system and method for storing high level radioactive waste. In one aspect, the invention is a specially designed ring-like structure for providing neutron and gamma radiation shielding for high level radioactive materials that produce residual heat. In one embodiment, the ring-like structure is designed to be stackable upon itself so as to form a stacked structure that completely surrounds an internal containment boundary. In another embodiment, the ring-like structure is designed to have voids with specially designed geometries for receiving neutron absorbing material. In another aspect, the invention is a spacer apparatus designed to be located within the containment boundary to support the fuel basket and/or to improve conductive heat removal through the containment boundary. In yet another aspect, the invention is a fuel basket comprising one or more flux traps that regulate production of neutron radiation and plates constructed of a metal matrix composite material.
