A method of decomposing an unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer which comprises bonding to a molecular chain thereof a functional group having the property of generating a free radical and then bringing a white-rot fungus or an enzyme excreted from a white-rot fungus into contact with the unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer. The method enables an unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer to be decomposed without adversely influencing the natural environment.

An unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer which has a calcium-trapping ability of 150 mg-CaCO3/g or higher, a degree of 28-day biodegradation of 40 % or higher, and a number-average molecular weight of 500 to 1,000,000; a process for producing an unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer which comprises copolymerizing an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a salt thereof with a quinone in the presence of a polymerization initiator; a builder comprising the polymer; a detergent composition comprising the builder and a surfactant; and a dispersant comprising the polymer. The polymer is excellent in the ability to trap calcium ions and biodegradability and is highly useful as a material for a builder.
