In addition, the plurality of the defect management areas are placed at locations, which are separated from each other in the radial direction of the disc-shaped recording medium, sandwiching a recording/reproduction condition adjustment area OPC having a relatively large size. If information stored in one defect management area is found to be different to information stored in another defect management area, then the information in the defect management areas is made uniform by copying the information stored in an earlier defect management area to a later defect management area in a predetermined priority order.

In step S3, the wobbling unit forms, on the optical disc, a spiral groove wobbled adaptively to the MSK modulation signal supplied from the modulator. In this optical disc, a given address can be accessed quickly and accurately.

    摘要: In a system using a write-once recording medium, proper operations are carried out while applying an overlap-recording method to front and rear linking areas. Each block used as a recording/reproduction unit is provided with linking portions to overlap in a recording operation. Each manufactured write-once recording medium is evaluated by selecting several mediums from those made at the same manufacturing lot for an inspection purpose. In the evaluation process, first of all, data is recorded onto a selected write-once recording medium in block units with the front linking portion of a next block unit overlapping the rear linking portion of the immediately preceding block unit. Then, the recorded block units are read out from the write-once recording medium and an error rate is measured. If the error rate is not greater than a predetermined value, the write-once recording medium is determined to be a good one. If the error rate is greater than the predetermined value, on the other hand, the write-once recording medium is determined to be a bad one and is rejected.
