In an optical fiber communication system a pulse reshaper can transform a distorted input light pulse into a reshaped output light pulse. The disclosed pulse reshaper is an all-optical pulse reshaper that comprises an optical waveguide having an effective length, the waveguide connecting the input and the output and comprising optical non-linear material, with a periodic variation of an effective refractive index of the optical waveguide. In accordance with the invention, a laser includes a tunable grating incorporated within the laser cavity. The grating is configured to provide GVD at wavelengths far from the photonic bandgap thus providing GVD compensation and management of intracavity dispersion. The grating is operated in the transmission mode and is configured so that reflection from within the photonic bandgap does not significantly affect the lasing condition. The grating is tunable, permitting adjustment of the intracavity GVD. In a preferred embodiment, the grating is an apodized fiber Bragg grating within the cavity of a modelocked fiber laser. The GVD of the fiber grating can be tuned by axial strain.
