A transmitter transmits a composite video signal and a multiplex signal on video carrier in a quadrature modulation method. A receiver synchronously detects an incoming signal with two orthogonal axes and separates the composite video signal from the multiplex signal to separately demodulate them. A crosstalk eliminator circuit to which the separately demodulated composite video signal and multiplex signal are supplied is connected in series with the ghost eliminator to eliminate ghost of the multiplex signal after eliminating crosstalk from the composite video signal to the multiplex signal. A waveform-equalized signal is obtained by adding a signal of only an inverse characteristic of crosstalk from the multiplex signal to the composite video signal with a decoded video signal. A non-linear extractor extracts non-linear crosstalk from the composite video signal, thereby obtaining a waveform-equalized multiplex signal by subtracting the non-linear crosstalk from the composite video signal to the multiplex signal from it.

Disclosed is a television signal processing apparatus in which a picture signal having a high resolution can be broadcast while maintaining compatibility with the conventional broadcast systems and ensuring developability of the conventional mode of broadcasting and according to which multiple broadcast programs can be simultaneously broadcast. For this purpose, the known letter box method is used to transmit the main panel part of a picture, and a novel method is used to transmit the remaining bar parts of the picture by a path of transmission through a bar signal processor unit (4) and a path of transmission through a quadrature modulator unit (7) provided for quadrature modulation of the video carrier. Further, various devices are provided for the purpose of future development. According to a first stage of the present invention using the above means, both the conventional mode of analog modulation and a new mode of modulation such as digital modulation are made in the same channel for broadcasting the same program, thereby providing a television receiver conforming to the new modulation mode and satisfying the new mode of picture display. According to a second aspect, the conventional analog modulation system is replaced by a new modulation system so as to transmit a high definition picture signal, so that the receiver can reproduce the picture having a very high degree of definition. Also, because the picture can be efficiently transmitted by the new mode of modulation, the high definition picture can be transmitted in the same frequency band, and the shift from the conventional system can be attained while maintaining compatibility. Further, multiple broadcast programs of conventional pictures can be efficiently transmitted.

Disclosed are multiplex signal processing apparatuses in a signal transmitting and receiving system. The apparatus at the transmitting side comprises: a first amplitude-modulator for modulating a first carrier by a main signal to obtain a vestigial side band, amplitude-modulated main signal; a second amplitude-modulator for modulating a second carrier which is same in frequency to and different in phase by 90 from the first carrier by a multiplex signal to obtain a double side band, amplitude-modulated multiplex signal; an inverse Nyquist filter for filtering this signal to obtain a vestigial side band, amplitude-modulated multiplex signal; and an adder for adding the vestigial side band, amplitude-modulated main and multiplex signals to obtain a multiplexed signal. The apparatus at the receiving side comprises: a Nyquist filter for filtering the multiplexed signal; a carrier regenerator for regenerating the first and second carriers from the multiplexed signal; a main signal detector for detecting the main signal from the multiplexed signal passed through the Nyquist filter by using the first carrier; a filter for removing quadrature distortion from the multiplexed signal; and a multiplex signal detector for detecting the multiplex signal from the multiplexed signal passed through the filter by using the second carrier. This invention, when applied to the television system, provides a large quantity of additional information while keeping compativility with the conventional television system.

In the television broadcasting system called letter box method, it is proposed to transmit an image having a larger aspect ratio than that of the existing broadcasting system by using some of the scanning lines of the existing broadcasting system, and transmit some additional information signal in the remaining portion. An offset value applied to the additional information signal at the transmission side must be removed completely at the reception side. Accordingly, at the reception side, in the scanning line in which an offset reference signal indicative of the offset value is transmitted, the offset reference value and a DC level reference value of the scanning line are detected, and these values are retained until a next offset reference signal is detected. By detecting a DC level of a scanning line containing the additional information signal, a difference from the DC level reference value previously detected and retained is obtained, and the offset reference value detected and retained previously is corrected by this difference. Thus obtained offset value is subtracted from the transmitted additional information signal.

A television signal processing apparatus is capable of generating a television signal which is compatible with a television signal of aspect ratio of 4:3 and possesses an aspect ratio greater than 4:3. At the transmission side, a video signal having a greater aspect ratio than 4:3 is converted into a first signal which settles within an image frame determined in a standard, and a second signal is disposed in other area than the image frame. An offset is applied to a pedestal in a horizontal blanking interval in an other area than the image frame, and a set-up is applied to the pedestal in an effective scanning period in the other area than the image frame. At the reception side, the offset and set-up of the pedestal in the multiplexed portion of the second signal are removed from a received signal, and a circuit for restoring the second signal is provided. When the generated television signal is received by an existing television receiver, the second signal is not annoying, and in a special-purpose receiver, a high resolution image of aspect ratio of 16:9 less in noise deterioration of the second signal can be received.
