A television signal processing system for multiplexing and transmitting additional information to the existing television broadcasting within the same transmission band as in the existing television broadcasting, assigns plural data to the amplitude or phase information in the frequency domain at the transmission side, and adjusts the amplitude of the frequency domain, then converts it into a signal in the time domain by inverse fast Fourier transform. The transformed signal is modulated by quadrature modulation of the video carrier, and limited in band by inverse Nyquist filter, and transmitted. At the reception side, the signal demodulated in quadrature by the video carrier is converted into information in the frequency domain, and the transmitted data is reproduced from that information.

Picture images which have an aspect ratio of 4:3 or larger are transmitted as main signals (M1 to M180) in a central main panel of the picture frame of a conventional system. A processing operating using the correlation of vertically adjacent scanning line signals is applied with respect to signals based on a wide television system for transmitting helper or reinforcement signals (S1 to S60) for improving the picture quality of the main signal and providing these signals in upper and lower panels. Cross talk caused between the main signals and the helper signals located in the upper and lower panels next to the main panel cause degradation of the picture quality. The present invention prevents cross talk from being caused, or makes its influence on the picture quality inconspicuous. The transmission system locates a signal (S30, S31) having a large correlation with the helper signal between the main panel, and the upper and lower panel or locates a signal (S1, S60) at the locations next to the main panel so that any picture degradation generated by cross talk is hidden by the over-scans of the display apparatus.

A transmitter transmits a composite video signal and a multiplex signal on video carrier in a quadrature modulation method. A receiver synchronously detects an incoming signal with two orthogonal axes and separates the composite video signal from the multiplex signal to separately demodulate them. A crosstalk eliminator circuit to which the separately demodulated composite video signal and multiplex signal are supplied is connected in series with the ghost eliminator to eliminate ghost of the multiplex signal after eliminating crosstalk from the composite video signal to the multiplex signal. A waveform-equalized signal is obtained by adding a signal of only an inverse characteristic of crosstalk from the multiplex signal to the composite video signal with a decoded video signal. A non-linear extractor extracts non-linear crosstalk from the composite video signal, thereby obtaining a waveform-equalized multiplex signal by subtracting the non-linear crosstalk from the composite video signal to the multiplex signal from it.
