This invention relates to a floor mat (12) which comprises a nonwoven substrate (16) through which carpet pile fibers (14) are tufted. The bottoms of the tufts (18) are adhered to a rubber backing sheet (20). The foam rubber backing sheet (20) either exhibits the same degree of shrinkage as the carpet pile component (14) or possesses a strength modulus above about 1,000 pounds per square inch. With such backing sheet requirements either the overall shrinkage of the mat (12) will be even or the backing sheet (20) will be strong enough to compensate for varying degrees of shrinkage between the pile substrate (16) and the backing sheet (20). The resultant floor mat (12) is the first such mat which meets industrial laundry standards of rippling (i.e., curling up) and delaminating (i.e., loosening and ultimate falling out of tufted pile fibers) which also utilizes a nonwoven carpet pile substrate (16) and which must also be able to withstand vigorous laundry processes without either damaging the subject rotary washer or centrifugal dryer or becoming damaged itself upon exposure to such harsh conditions.

A sculpted launderable dust control mat is provided. The dust control mat includes a pile fiber upper surface and a rubber backing disposed beneath the pile fiber upper surface. The pile fiber upper surface is formed of solution-dyed nylon yarns which have undergone selective sculpting through controlled exposure to a fiber degrading composition.
