An apparatus and method for selectively carving textile fabric (12) by selectively applying chemicals containing a liquid repellant either alone or with a colorant such as a dye to a textile fabric and subsequently drying said fabric. The textile fabric (12) from a supply roll (18) passes over an idler roll (32) and into a dyeing apparatus (16). The dyeing apparatus (16) includes a mesh print screen (20) and a squeegee (21). The mesh print screen is opposite a support roll (26) with the textile fabric (12) passing therebetween. The chemicals from the mesh print screen are applied in a selectively patterned arrangement. The textile fabric (12) then passes into a finishing apparatus (34) that typically includes a hot air oven. The textile fabric (12) then moves to a take-up roll (14) for collection.

A process for producing printed articles which comprises forming an under coat on a cloth having a rough surface with a foamed composition of a resin emulsion by printing, drying the formed under coat, forming a top coat on the dried under coat by printing and drying the formed top coat. In accordance with the process, cloths having a rough surface such as frieze cloths, pile cloths, knit cloths, towel cloths, felt cloths and blanket cloths can be printed while the proper feel of the cloth is maintained and printed articles having excellent fastness and appearance are obtained.

Furthermore, one or more methods of making such a textile also are disclosed. The textile includes a first side having first regions and second regions in a predetermined pattern. The first and second regions differ in color shade values due to the etching of the textile, which has the effect of degrading or dissolving fiber material from the second regions, thereby providing a three dimensional sculpted geometry and a color contrast between etched and non-etched areas. Screen printing is applied using an extremely strong acidic or alkali composition paste upon the textile, followed by heating. Then, a washing step and a drying step results in a product having a color shade difference between etched areas and non-etched areas having differing DeltaL* color shade values using L*a*b* color space measurement techniques.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for significantly increasing the density of particulates on a substrate. The method includes disposing a particulate material, such as fibers or abrasive material, onto a surface of the substrate, whereby the particles adhere to the substrate. The substrate is then exposed to conditions sufficient to cause the surface area, on which the particulate material is disposed, to diminish significantly, thereby significantly increasing the density of the particulate material. The apparatus includes a support on which the substrate is disposed, means for disposing the particulate material in the substrate and means for causing the surface on which the particulate material is disposed to significantly diminish.

Novel cloth giving an unparalleled impression of new material and being rich in fashionableness and unexpectedness and a process for its production are disclosed. The cloth is a three-dimensional cloth with a special structure wherein groups of a plurality of raised fibers are unified at their tips in a flattened form to give scaly structures which cover the cloth surface layer. The process for producing the cloth comprises subjecting a raised fiber layer having many raised fibers to thermal pressing treatment to thereby adhere the tips of the raised fiber surface layer in a large area to thereby form a film, and crumpling it to split into smaller units to thereby form numerous scaly structures. The three-dimensional cloth of the present invention can be widely utilized in various applications such as outerwears.
