A method to improve the efficiency of scale dissolution in a formation containing multiple productive intervals (20, 22, 24, 26) where variable density liquids are utilized. Initially, a liquid composition sufficient to solubilize an alkaline-earth metal sulphate scale deposit is directed into a wellbore (10) thereby contacting scale in one productive interval of the formation. Thereafter, a second scale solubilizing liquid having a density less than the first liquid is directed into the wellbore (10) thereby contacting additional perforations (14) and a higher interval. These scale solubilizing liquids with varying densities are allowed to remain in contact with perforations (14) and productive intervals (20, 22, 24, 26) communicating therewith for a time sufficient to solubilize the scale deposit thereby efficiently removing said scale deposit from perforations (14) and productive intervals (20, 22, 24, 26) at two different levels.

Oil is extracted from oil-contaminated soil by mixing a solvent with the soil to form a slurry, passing the slurry through a shaker screen (14) to remove soil particles greater than 1/4 inch and then feeding the slurry into the top of an acoustic chamber (16). Fresh solvent is injected into the bottom of the acoustic chamber (16) and flows upwardly through it at a rate such that the soil particles fall through the flowing solvent. The soil particles and solvent in the acoustic chamber are subjected to acoustic energy in the frequency range of 0.5 to 2.0 kHz to displace the oil from the soil particles without cavitation of the solvent. Soil particles (26) containing only 0.2 to 0.4 wt.% oil are recovered from the bottom of the acoustic chamber (16) and spread over the land for land farming. The method may also be used for extracting oil from oily sludge or oil-based drill cuttings.

Surface layers of the earth contaminated with precipitates of alkaline earth metal sulfates including radium sulfate derived from subterranean waters brought to the surface of the earth, are decontaminated using an aqueous chemical composition including a polyaminopolycarboxylic acid such as ETDA or DTPA in combination with a synergist, preferably oxalate or monocarboxylic acid anion such as salicylate. The surface layers may be decontaminated in situ by applying the solvent to the earth to bring the precipitates into dissolved form after which the dissolved precipitates are leached into lower layers of the earth by percolation with water. Alternatively, the earth may be removed from its original site and decontaminated in a tank or lined pond after which the decontaminated earth may be returned to its approximate original site. There is also disclosed a method of decontaminating natural gas processing equipment using the aqueous chemical composition.
