The invention relates to a method for load control and a radio system. In the invention a load result describing the load is cell-specifically formed. The load result is formed either by comparing a signal strength of desired signals (23) and a combined total strength of interferences (13) and the desired signals (23) or by weighting a signal-to-interference ratio with a bandwidth or a data transmission rate. The load result is compared with a threshold value of the highest load level allowed of a cell (1). The data transmission rate in the cell (1) is increased if the load result is smaller than the threshold value. The data transmission rate in the cell (1) is reduced and the establishment of new connections is avoided if the load result exceeds the threshold value. In heavy load situations a signal-to-interference objective is also changed in order to balance the load result.

The invention relates to interference cancellation in a cellular CDMA network served by base stations. The method of the invention comprises receiving in a mobile station (MS) a CDMA signal transmitted by at least one base station (BTS2) of a neighbouring cell (B) in the network and defining the phase of the spread spectrum code of the signal transmitted by said at least one neighbouring base station (BTS2) and monitoring its signal strength. After this, the measurement results of the mobile station (MS) are transmitted via the base station which is serving it to the CDMA network which infers whether the mobile station interferes with the base stations (BTS2) of the neighbouring cells. If interference occurs, the neighbouring cell base stations (BTS2) are informed of the channel the interfering mobile station (MS) is using, and the information of the signal transmitted by the interfering mobile station (MS) is utilized by taking it into account in the receivers of signals transmitted by other mobile stations within the cell.

Signals (15) of the base station (11) and the subscriber terminal equipment (13) are synchronized and the subscriber terminal equipment (13) sends a randomly selected identifier. The identifier determines a transit channel to which the subscriber terminal equipment (13) suggests to move. The base station (11) may change the suggested transit channel and echo the identifier back to the subscriber terminal equipment (13), and the base station (11) and the subscriber terminal equipment (13) communicate on the transit channel from which they move to a traffic channel. The inventive method accelerates connection establishment.
