The mobile station is arranged to measure the characteristics of the received signal, such as the signal level and/or quality, in each time slot allocated to the mobile station, and that the fixed radio network is arranged to control the transmitting power of the mobile station and/or make the decision on a handover on the basis of a combination of measurement results of two or more time slots, or on the basis of the measurement result of the poorest time slot.

Signals (15) of the base station (11) and the subscriber terminal equipment (13) are synchronized and the subscriber terminal equipment (13) sends a randomly selected identifier. The identifier determines a transit channel to which the subscriber terminal equipment (13) suggests to move. The base station (11) may change the suggested transit channel and echo the identifier back to the subscriber terminal equipment (13), and the base station (11) and the subscriber terminal equipment (13) communicate on the transit channel from which they move to a traffic channel. The inventive method accelerates connection establishment.

The present invention relates to a method for improving data transmission in a mobile telecommunications system, in which method data is transmitted over the radio path between a mobile station (MS) and a base station (BTS) as bursts in time slots allocated to the mobile station by successive frames. In the invention, a divider (82) splits a data signal (DATAIN) whose speed is higher than the maximum data transfer rate in one frame into at least two signals of lower speed (DATA1, DATA2) before transmission over the radio path. The mobile station (MS) is allocated at least two time slots in each successive frame for high-speed data transmission so that each of said signals of lower speed (DATA1, DATA2) is transmitted over the radio path in its respective time slot. A combiner (85) combines the signals of lower speed (DATA1, DATA2) received over the radio path into the original signal.
