A dual mode terminal (20) is provided, in which a mobile station (21) of a mobile radio system and a cordless telephone (22) are combined. This kind of terminal can have a connection with both a base station of the mobile radio system and a base station (fixed part) of the cordless telephone system. Handover in the case of this dual mode terminal implies the transfer of a call from the base station of the mobile radio system to a base station of the cordless telephone system. A call re-establishment procedure is utilized for inter-system handovers between a cordless telephone system having terminal-initiated handovers and the supporting mobile radio system having network-initiated handovers.

The cordless telephone part of the terminal forwards these measurement results via a fixed part of the cordless telephone system to the mobile exchange of the mobile system in a handover request message. The mobile exchange selects a proper base station for handover and informs the mobile station part of the terminal about the identity of the selected base station via the cordless telephone part.

In mobile radio systems, it may be necessary to support multiple radio interfaces (1, 2) within a single mobile radio network. To support these multiple radio interfaces, it may be necessary to support even multiple signalling protocols within a single interface (A-interface) between a base station controller (BSC) and a mobile switch (10), when base stations (BTS1, BTS2) supporting different radio interfaces are connected via a common base station controller (BSC) to the mobile switch (10). The mobile switch (10) and the base station controller (BSC) must be capable of recognizing to which signalling protocol a message transfer in the single interface belongs to. According to the present invention the messages transferred in the single interface (A-interface) are provided with a discrimination parameter which can be used to discriminate between the messages belonging to different radio interfaces (1, 2) and signalling protocols.

The invention relates to a method for location updating in a cellular radio network. The network stores subscriber data permanently in a home location register (HLR) and temporarily in visitor location registers (VLR) integrated with mobile services switching centers (MSC). In connection with a call setup, the HLR requests the VLR to provide routing information for the subscriber, whereafter the inbound call is routed to the pertinent MSC and the subscriber is paged by the radio path. In the invention, the network updates the location of the subscriber by check paging performed as a background run at suitable times.

If the first call-related message sent by the private branch exchange to the mobile services switching center is a connection establishment request instead of a service request, the mobile services switching center initiates connection establishment without an interrogation to the visitor location register.

Un central (MSC1, MSC2) du réseau de transmission est relié à un sous-système possédant des codes d'identité d'abonné ayant un second format, ainsi qu'une seconde procédure d'authenitification d'abonnés. Les appels des abonnés (MT1 à MT6) du sous-système sont acheminés par le réseau de transmission et ledit central (MSC1, MSC2). Dans ledit système, l'authenitification des deux types d'abonnés peut s'effectuer dans le réseau de transmission par la localisation des algorithmes générateurs de paramètres à la fois de la première et de la seconde procédure d'authenitification dans un centre d'authenitification (AC) du réseau de transmission. L'algorithme convenant à chaque abonné à authentifier est sélectionné en fonction du type de l'abonné (MS, MT1 à MT6).
