A decision is made as to whether a radio base station acting as an interference source is present in a macrocell or microcell, so that the interference from a mobile station transmitting at high power can be prevented in advance. The base station inserts its transmission power value of a forward broadcast channel into broadcast information. A newly installed base station C, receiving a forward frequency band, measures the received level of the broadcast channel, and captures the transmitted power value. A propagation loss is calculated from the received level of the broadcast channel and the transmission power value acquired, and a decision is made that the channel is available, if the propagation loss is less than a certain value, and the received level is less than the threshold value.

In mobile communication systems employing the CDMA method, the communication quality is acquired from the CDMA pilot channel. A communication quality acquisition apparatus comprises a delay profile acquisition unit comprising a control unit, synchronization unit and measurement unit, in addition to a data storage unit. The communication quality is measured by the synchronization unit and the measurement unit which are alternatively controlled by the control unit. When the communication quality is acquired through the CDMA pilot channel, the data acquisition efficiency can be significantly raised.

In this invention, a channel estimation value of data symbols of a data channel is calculated by weighting and averaging pilot symbols in a parallel time multiplexing method. Also, a channel estimation value of data symbols during each data symbol interval is calculated by dividing data symbols in a slot into a plurality of data symbol intervals, selecting pilot symbols suitable for calculation of a channel estimation value of data symbols during each data symbol interval and weighting and averaging that pilot symbols. Also, a fading frequency is detected based on an inner product value of pilot symbols. Weighting factors are changed based on the detected fading frequency. Also, a channel estimation value is calculated by weighting and averaging pilot signals using a plurality of weighting sequences. The calculated channel estimation value is used to demodulate received data. The output data with the highest quality is selected by judging reliability of these plurality of demodulated data. It is also possible to select some weighting sequences based on the result of the reliability judgment of the demodulated data for predetermined period of time. In this case, after the selection, demodulation is performed by using these selected weighting sequences only.

In a mobile communications system, its power consumption and time required for a mobile station to carry out neighboring cell search are reduced, and the complicated process involved in system design and management is simplified. A method is proposed of searching for a neighboring cell by using grouped channel identifiers sent from the sectors to the mobile station in the mobile communications system that allows the mobile station communicating with a plurality of base stations to decide sectors the mobile station waits for or communicates with. It includes the step of assigning channel identifiers belonging to the same group to sectors of the same base station, and the step of sending from the base station to the visiting mobile station a notification of any one of the channel identifiers assigned to the sectors of one of neighboring base stations.
