The invention relates to a detergent composition, comprising from about 0.5 to 65% by weight of a surfactant and from about 1 to 80% by weight of a builder, wherein the builder is a polymer comprising a repeating unit of the structure: wherein X is H, alkali metal ion, ammonium ion, hydroxyethylammonium ion, C₁-C₁₂ alkyl, or C₅-C₁₂ cycloalkyl, or a combination thereof. The builder can further be a polymer of divinyl ether, maleic anyhdride and at least one copolymerizable comonomer, selected from the group consisting of alkenyl alkyl ether, alkyl acrylates, alkenyl carboxyalkyl ether, vinyl esters of C₁ or C₃ or greater carboxylic acids, unsaturated carboxylic acids, unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and their esters, and olefins, and wherein the polymer further comprises a repeating unit of the structure: wherein A is the comonomer(s); X is H, alkali metal ion, ammonium ion, hydroxyethylammonium ion, C₁-C₁₂ alkyl, or C₅-C₁₂ cycloalkyl, or a combinatin thereof; m and n are greater than 1; and p is from 5 to 4,000. Further the invention relates to a method for washing a fabric using the above detergent composition.

A carpet back coating composition which is an aqueous emulsion polymerization product of ethylene, vinyl acetate, and a ethylenically unsaturated hydroxy-functional monomer to form an emulsion copolymer which is combined with a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of multifunctional aziridine, multifunctional isocyanate, and multifunctional epoxide. Carpets prepared with the carpet back coating compositions exhibit improved wet strength. The improvement in wet strength is achieved by means of crosslinking reactions which do not generate volatile organic compounds as by-products.

A formaldehyde-free latent crosslinking monomer represented by the formula
in which R¹ and R² are C⁵-C⁷ alkyl; R³ is hydrogen, C⁵-C⁷ alkyl, or R4-C(O)-; and R4 is C⁵-C⁷ alkyl or C¼-C¾ aryl, contains an allyl group capable of undergoing addition copolymerization and a dialkoxy ethyl group capable of crosslinking under acidic conditions. The monomer can be copolymerized with comonomers to form emulsion polymers for use as formaldehyde-free binders in nonwoven textiles. Methods for the preparation of the monomer, the polymers, and the nonwoven fabrics are described.
