The present invention provides a method for preparing a cationic electrodeposition coating composition that includes a step in which a resin emulsion (i) and a pigment dispersion paste are mixed. The resin emulsion (i) contains an aminated resin (A) and a block isocyanate curing agent (B). The pigment dispersion paste contains a metal compound (C), a pigment dispersion resin (D), and a pigment (E). The metal compound (C) is at least one of a metal oxide and a metal hydroxide containing at least one substance selected from the group consisting of La, Nd, Y, Pr, Yb, and Ce as a metal element. The pigment dispersion paste is prepared by a step in which the metal compound (C) and the pigment dispersion resin (D) are mixed and the mixture obtained thereby is mixed with the pigment dispersion resin (D) and the pigment (E).

An electrodeposition coating composition of the present invention comprising: at least one compound (A) selected from the group consisting of a zinc compound (A-1) and a bismuth compound (A-2); an aminated resin (B); and a curing agent (C), wherein a milligram equivalent (MEQ (A)) of an acid per 100 g of a resin solid content in the composition is 27 or more; a coulombic efficiency of the composition is 30 mg/C or less; a film resistance of a 15-µm-thick uncured electrodeposition coating film formed using the composition is 400 kΩ·cm 2 or more; and a coating film viscosity of an electrodeposition coating film obtained from the composition is 3000 Pa·s or less at 50°C.

The present invention provides a method for producing an epoxy viscous agent for a cationic electrodeposition coating material, the method comprising: (1) an amine modification step in which an amine-modified epoxy resin is obtained by reacting an amine compound and a chain-extended epoxy resin that is obtained by extending a chain of a polyphenol polyglycidyl ether-type epoxy resin and has a material having a relative molecular weight of 100,000 or more in a proportion of 13.0-18.0 mass%, (2) a dispersion step in which a portion or the entirety of an amine group of the obtained amine-modified epoxy resin is neutralized with an acid and dispersed in an aqueous solvent, and (3) a high molecular weight obtaining step in which an obtained dispersion is mixed and reacted with a polyphenol polyglycidyl ether-type epoxy resin to obtain an epoxy viscous agent.
