A method for manufacturing an alkylated phenylnaphthylamine composition includes alkylating nonalkylated phenylnaphthylamine with olefin in the presence of clay catalyst without subsequent removal of nonalkylated phenylnaphthylamine and polyalkylated phenylnaphthylamine. Suitable nonalkylated phenylnaphthylamines include N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine, its derivatives, and mixtures thereof. The alkylated phenylnaphthylamine compositions can be used in antioxidant and lubricant compositions.

Dithiocarbonate derivatives are disclosed, along with a process for preparing the same. The dithiocarbonate compounds can be utilized as initators, chain transfer agents and/or terminators in controlled free radical polymerizations. The dithiocarbonates can be used to produce polymers having narrow molecular weight distribution. Advantageously, the compounds of the present invention can also introduce functional groups into the resulting polymers. The dithiocarbonate compounds have low odor and are substantially colorless.

In particular, the nitrogen-containing free radicals and free radical precursors are used to effect efficient, controlled polymerization of polymeric materials, including monomers, to form polymers, including homopolymers, copolymers, and block polymers. In particular, nitroxide compounds, methods of making nitroxide compounds, methods of using the nitroxide compounds to polymerize monomer compositions, and polymer compositions made using the nitroxide compounds are disclosed.

An oligomer from diarylamines is disclosed which has desirable antioxidant properties in lubricating oils which contain synthetic ester lubricants. The oligomer is desirable for use at higher temperatures where it has less volatility than simple diarylamines. The oligomer has substantial portions of monosubstituted diphenylamine repeat units which result in linear oligomers. Di and polysubstituted diphenylamines may optionally be present as repeat units. These di and polysubstituted diphenylamines generally react as monofunctional reactants in oligomerization and tend to reduce the number of repeat units in the average oligomer.
