Lubricating oils useful as gear oils, circulating oils, compressor oils and in other applications characterized by and excellent balance of anti-wear and anti-rust characteristics are based on high quality base stocks including a major portion of a hydrocarbon base fluid such as a PAO with a secondary base stock component which is preferably a long chain alkylated aromatic, such as an alkylnaphthalene. A synergistic combination of additives comprising an adduct of a substituted triazole such as benzotriazole or a substituted benzotriazole, e.g. tolyltriazole (TTZ) with an amine phosphate and a trihydrocarbyl phosphate such as cresyl diphenylphosphate (CDP), confers the desired balance of anti-wear and anti-rust properties. In addition, the present oils typically include an anti-oxidant component and a rust inhibitor together with other optional additive components.

The present invention relates to lubricating compositions and particularly gear oil compositions that include a minimum level of a specific antioxidant component, where the antioxidant component includes (i) a phenolic antioxidant, (ii) an aminic antioxidant, or (iii) a combination thereof, where the antioxidant component is present in the lubricating composition at from 1.0 percent by weight or higher. Such compositions provide surprisingly good seal compatibility.

wherein R 2 is a bivalent aromatic hydrocarbon group having 6 to 15 carbon atoms; and R 1 and R 3 , which may be the same or different represent a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 16 to 20 carbon atoms or cyclohexyl group, with the ratio of the number of moles of the straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 16 to 20 carbon atoms to the total number of moles of the cyclohexyl group and the straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 16 to 20 carbon atoms, expressed as [((the number of alkyl group) / (the number of cyclohexyl group + the number of alkyl group)) x 100] being 60 to 80%, and a base oil which has a kinematic viscosity at 40°C of 15 to 50 mm 2 /s and includes a trimethylolpropane ester oil in an amount of 80 mass% or more based on the total mass of the base oil. The grease composition of the invention can exhibit a long bearing lubrication life under the conditions of high temperature and high speed, and satisfactory low-temperature flowability.
