The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition for regulating apoptosis containing at least one active ingredient selected from the group consisting of 2,3-dihydro-1H-indene derivatives represented by general formula (I), (wherein R?1, R2, R3 and R4¿ are each the same or different and are lower alkyl groups; R5 is a lower alkoxy group; and A is a lower alkylene group) and salts thereof. The present invention also provides methods for treating and preventing various diseases by regulating apoptosis by use of said pharmaceutical composition.
