An object of the present invention is to provide a process to obtain a calcium carbonate material comprising GCC and PCC, with a specific steepness factor (defined as d 30 /d 70 x 100, where d x is the equivalent spherical diameter relative to which x % by weight of the particles are finer) of at least about 30, preferably of at least about 40, and most preferably of at least about 45, in a cost efficient manner, wherein GCC and PCC are co-ground, possibly with at least another mineral material. An other object of the present invention lies in the the obtained co-ground calcium carbonate material in the form of an aqueous suspension and in the form of a dry product. An other object of the present invention lies in the uses of such products in any sector making use of mineral materials, and notably in the paper, paint and plastic industries.

The present invention relates to a process for the production of a precipitated divalent metal ion carbonate product from a divalent metal ion carbonate which was recovered from waste, the precipitated divalent metal ion carbonate product having an improved brightness, the process comprising the steps of: providing a low-purity divalent metal ion carbonate material, the divalent metal ion carbonate material being recovered from waste; calcining the divalent metal ion carbonate material in order to obtain a divalent metal ion oxide; slaking the divalent metal ion oxide in order to obtain an aqueous suspension of a divalent metal ion hydroxide; carbonating the aqueous suspension of the divalent metal ion hydroxide with a carbon dioxide containing compound in order to obtain fine precipitated divalent metal ion carbonate particles; post-treating the fine precipitated divalent metal ion carbonate particles to obtain fine discrete precipitated divalent metal ion carbonate particles; adding the fine discrete precipitated divalent metal ion carbonate particles to an aqueous suspension of divalent metal ion hydroxide that was obtained by slaking high-purity divalent metal ion hydroxide in order to obtain a resulting reaction mixture; and carbonating the resulting reaction mixture in order to obtain the precipitated divalent metal ion carbonate product having an improved brightness.

The invention relates to novel and innovative PCC pigments, able to be used in a paper coating formulations to manufacture coated "multipurpose" papers, in particular for inkjet applications, whose print qualities would be identical or quite similar to high resolution commercial papers, while maintaining a reduced paper manufacturing and production cost. Said pigments are obtained by a carbonation process using a reduced flow rate of CO 2 /air, which leads to porous agglomerates of PCC of a very specific structure and unique properties, followed by an upconcentration step leading to substantially the same agglomerates but with a higher, appropriate, solids content.
