Abstract:
A color-plus-clear coating system is disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent top coat to the base coat. The transparent top coat composition is a liquid crosslinkable composition comprising a polyepoxide and a polyacid curing agent. The polyepoxide-polyacid curing agent in the transparent top coat provides a composite coating with outstanding gloss and distinctness of image making the composite coating particularly useful as an automotive top coat.

Also disclosed is a curable composition based on a resin corresponding to formula (1) and the composition additionally containing an organic polyol and/or a reactive silicon-containing constituent different from the resin of formula (I) which silicon-containing constituent contains a hydrolyzable group bonded to silicon. Disclosed is an adduct of a mercapto-functional monohydric alcohol and a vinyl-type silane having at least one hydrolyzable group directly attached to a silicon atom, the adduct prepared by reacting the mercapto-functional monohydric alcohol and the vinyl-type silane in the presence of a free radical initiator. Also disclosed is an NCO-functional compound comprising the reaction product of: (A) the aforesaid adduct of a mercapto-functional monohydric alcohol and a vinyl-type silane having at least one hydrolyzable group directly attached to a silicon atom, and (B) an organic polyisocyanate.
