A substantial increase (34, 44) of said meaningful signal, which is obtained following a variation (31, 41) resulting from the motor being switched from running on a lean mixture to running on a rich mixture, from a first plate (32, 42) having an essentially constant level is used as an indicator for controlling the end of the purge process. The invention applies to diesel engines.

The invention concerns a method which consists in arranging a oxygen probe (21) of an exhaust pipe and observing that substantial unique increase of said representative signal towards a threshold value S1 calculated from the start of the bleeding of the nitrogen oxide trap, obtained following a variation subsequent to shift of the engine from lean mixture operating conditions to rich mixture operating conditions, being used as indicator for controlling the end of the bleeding operation. The invention is characterized in that the integration of the signal representing the time between the start of the bleeding and the end of the bleeding, then the comparison of the integration value to a threshold value S2 are used for diagnosing its ageing condition. The invention also concerns a device for implementing said method.

The invention relates to a method of estimating a nitrogen oxide mass stored in a catalytic nitrogen oxide trapping device (1) which comprises a catalytic phase and which is traversed by the exhaust gases (2) from the internal combustion engine (3) of a motor vehicle (4) comprising an electronic control unit (5). The inventive method consists in: discretising the geometry of the catalytic trapping device (1) into several (n) perfectly-stirred, successive individual reactors (6, 7); and combining a thermal model, which can be used to calculate the temperature variation of the catalytic phase of the catalytic trapping device (1) during the traversing movement of the exhaust gases, and an absorption model, which can be used at any moment to calculate the nitrogen oxide mass stored in the catalytic trapping device (1) on the basis of the characteristics of said device (1), the temperatures from the thermal model for each individual reactor and the exhaust gas mass flow from the engine (3).
