Disclosed is a method and a circuit arrangement for carrying out a method to protect an electric motor (10) and/or a control circuit (12) thereof from an overload in an emergency operation mode. The inventive method and associated circuit arrangement are more particularly used to protect a direct current fan motor in a motor vehicle, operated by means of pulse-width modulation. The control circuit is embodied in the form of an emergency control unit with a microcontroller (16) which is mounted upstream from the final stage (20) of the motor and a comparator arrangement (14) which is used to detect excess voltages. The inventive measures provide protection from overload during increased battery voltage and when the emergency control unit is activated as a result of malfunctions in the normal control circuit (12) of the electric motor (10). At least one excess voltage threshold (Us1,Us2) is thus set. When said threshold is exceeded, the power supplied to the motor is reduced or disconnected.

The interface (12) also has means for detecting fault conditions in the bus lines (18, 19). In the process of the invention, the time (TH, TL) is found which, starting from a voltage (Ux) to be transformed, is needed to charge or discharge an RC circuit (10, 12) to a predetermined reference voltage, e.g. a switching threshold (SH, SL) of a comparator (14). In the device of the invention, there is a selector (13), the comparator (14) and a time detector (15) in a microprocessor which is fitted with the RC circuit (10, 12) and possibly with an input resistor (11). The process and device of the invention are particularly easy to make and are particularly suitable for use with a microprocessor (17) without an integrated analog/digital converter.
