A method is proposed for optimising data and/or program parts for programmed control units, which can be used in the application of motor vehicle control units. The method involves connecting the control unit (10) via an interface (SSO) to an external applications device (11) which is used to enter the requisite modifications to the data and/or program parts to be optimised. The proposed method is characterized by the fact that at the start of the optimisation process the data and/or program parts to be optimised are located into the data and/or program ramdom access memory (RAM) of the control unit (10). The method is further characterized by the fact that specific modifications are made in the control program and/or the memory- and/or register spaces in the control unit (10), as a result of which the microcomputer ( mu P, 12) of the control unit (10), instead of accessing the data and/or program parts in the data and/or program ROM (flash-EPROM), accesses the corresponding data and/or program parts in the data and/or program random access memory (RAM). It is proposed, for a control unit used for implementing this method, that a decoder circuit (41) should be provided in the control unit (10); that circuit effects a switching operation whenever the microcomputer (40) accesses a particular address or address region. The switching operation ensures that the microcomputer (40), instead of accessing the data and/or program parts in the data and/or program ROM (42), accesses the corresponding data and/or program parts in the data and/or program random acess memory (43).
