where n is in the range 15 to 120, having number average molecular weight (M n ) in the range 700 to 5000, and molar ratio succinic acid moieties : atactic propylene oligomer in the range 1:1 to 1.5:1, wherein the succinimide is derived from a C₁₋₅₀ amine; a process for their preparation; and lubricating compositions containing them.

The invention provides a process for the preparation of a polyalkenyl derivative of a monoethylenically unsaturated C₄₋₁₀ dicarboxylic acid material wherein the ratio of dicarboxylic acid moieties per polyalkenyl chain is less than 1.2:1, which comprises reacting a polyalkene having M n in the range 950 to 5000 with a monoethylenically unsaturated C₄₋₁₀ dicarboxylic acid material in mol ratio dicarboxylic acid material: polyalkene greater than 1:1 at a temperature in the range 150 to 260°C in the presence of a polyaddition-inhibiting amount of a sulphonic acid.

Novel glycidylated aromatic amines are provided which have the following chemical formula in which each R and each R′ is selected independently from H, CH₃ and CH₂CH₃ and at least one R and one R′ is wherein each S is selected independently from CH₂ and CH₂CH₂, and each R˝ is selected independently from H, C₁-C₁₀ alkyl and halide. The novel glycidylated aromatic amines are particularly suitable for use in reinforced, curable epoxy resin systems which can be used for applications such as automotive and aerospace materials fabrication. The cured resins have improved resistance to water absorption.
