The method involves adding to the lubricating oil composition an effective amount of one or more fluorocarbon elastomer compatibility improving agents of the general formula Si—X4 or a hydrolysis product thereof, wherein each X is independently a hydroxyl-containing group, hydrocarbyloxy-containing group, acyloxy-containing group, amino-containing group, monoalkyl amino-containing group or dialkyl amino-containing group.

More particularly, the present invention relates to compositions comprising a combination of a pyrion compound selected from sodium pyrithione and 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinone together with polyethyleneimines; in respective proportions to provide a synergistic biocidal effect. Compositions comprising these combinations are useful for the protection of any living or non-living material, such as crops, plants, fruits, seeds, objects made of wood, thatch or the like, engineering material, biodegradable material and textiles against deterioration due to the action of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, yeasts, algae, viruses, and the like.

A succinimide composition is prepared by reacting a mixture of (i) a polyalkenyl derivative, (ii) of an unsaturated acidic reagent an unsaturated acidic reagent copolymer, and (iii) a polyamine. The polyalkenyl derivative is produced by reacting an unsaturated acidic reagent with a polyalkene in the presence of a strong acid, preferably a sulfonic acid. The unsaturated acidic reagent copolymer is a copolymer of an unsaturated acidic reagent and an olefin. The succinimide composition has an improved fluorocarbon elastomer compatibility, improved dispersancy, hydraulytic stability and shear stress stability. It is used in lubricating oils and fuels.
