The present exemplary embodiment provides a negative electrode active material for a secondary battery including: a silicon oxide particle including a metal silicate; and a hydrocarbon coating layer on the silicon oxide particle, wherein a peak Pa is detected in 2880 cm-1 to 2950 cm-1 and a peak Pb is detected in 2800 cm-1 to 2865 cm-1 in FT-IR spectral analysis of the negative electrode active material. According to the exemplary embodiment, the hydrocarbon coating layer having a specific composition is prepared on the silicon oxide particle to prevent elution of residual metal in the silicon oxide particle to increase slurry stability, and in particular, even when the slurry is left for a long time, slurry gas emission may be significantly decreased to increase slurry stability.
